This meet is a real treat

VENTURA COUNTY TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Ventura County Track and Field Championships featured moments of jubilee and disappointment.

Some competitors broke personal and meet records. Others fell short of achieving their goals.

The area’s finest high school student-athletes showcased their skills at last weekend’s county meet at Moorpark High.

Newbury Park’s Savannah Sipes and Oaks Christian’s Jontelle Cabral battled to the finish line in the girls’100-meter hurdles.

“This is why I love this meet, because you compete against your rivals,” said Sipes, who won the 100 hurdles in 14.96 seconds. “I kind of messed up on first hurdle, and then I saw Jontelle Cabral next to me. I knew I had to be perfect the rest of the way.”

Sahm Bazargan, an Oak Park junior, needed his best performance of the season to win the boys’ 800.

“There are a lot of great runners here,” said Bazargan, who won the two-lap race in 1 minute, 53.28 seconds. “I was really pushed. I got a PR. I didn’t think I would run that fast.”

Here are other highlights of the Ventura County Championships:

WARRIORS FLEX MUSCLES

Westlake’s boys’ and girls’ track and field teams spent plenty of time at the awards podium.

The Warriors took first in the girls’ 4x100-meter relay in 48.03 seconds.

Westlake is the defending CIF-Southern Section Division 2 champion in the relay, but the relay squad has endured nagging injuries this spring.

“It’s been a tough year for us with all the injuries, but with this win, we feel like we’re starting to peak,” said sophomore Abigail Smith.

“We didn’t even get a (personal best) time. We’re going to get a lot better as we get into shape.”

Smith, Brooke Edell, Nicole Greenberg and Sara Schwartz squeaked by Oaks Christian, which took second in 48.67.

“Beating Oaks was great,” Smith said. “We’ve never beat them.”

Smith missed the first three weeks of the season with injuries on her left foot and back.

The Warrior and Schuyler Moore of Oaks Christian tied for first in the 100 dash. They clocked in at 11.87 seconds.

Westlake sophomores Ryan Finch and Jon Cantle took first and second, respectively, in the boys’ 400. Both runners recorded personal-best times, with Finch clocking in at 49.26 and Cantle at 49.61.

“I was shocked that we both broke 50 seconds,” Finch said. “For two sophomores to get first and second, that’s a big accomplishment for our school. I’m excited for the years to come.”
